2024

Year One

Staring Out in My Garage.

I did most of my work outside

First Firing

Firing my brand new kiln,

I realized very quickly how much I had yet to learn.

Each kiln is unique,

every glaze and claybody has different properties.

This red glaze was not the one I intended to use.

I didn’t realize this ran so much causing glass to puddle at the bottom.

Second Fire

I thought I was making good progress,

Getting my pyrometric cones to the right bend point.

Working through issues, and experimenting with new designs.

Though not my favorite,

this new blue/green glaze worked reliably.

Third Fire

My third fire was my best yet.

Cones falling to the right point, glaze working as intended.

The future looked bright,

At this rate I was looking to expand in the new year.

Speckled Brownstone,

the clay body of choice for the Western NC region,

was woking perfectly for me.

But it wouldn’t last.

Hurricane Helene

would devastate Asheville and the and destroy High Water Clay.

I need to find a new clay body!
